Strengthening of economic relations between the two countries

Switzerland is one of the most important economic partners of Montenegro

The economic ties of these countries are dynamic and diverse with the growing interest of Swiss companies in investing and opening businesses in Montenegro. Switzerland is among the leading foreign investors on the Montenegrin market with a total value of Swiss investments in Montenegro of approximately EUR 800 million in the period since 2003.

Swiss companies are active in numerous areas of business in the Montenegrin market, such as the pharmaceutical industry, tourism, mining and IT, and are present in various regions of the country, including Podgorica, Tivat, Bijelo Polje and Mojkovac, which contributes to a more balanced regional development of Montenegro.

The establishment of the Swiss-Montenegro Chamber of Commerce is a significant achievement for bilateral relations between Switzerland and Montenegro.

Statistics

According to the data of the Government of Montenegro, in 2020, trade in goods with Switzerland amounted to 47.97 million euros, of which exports were 7.84 million euros, and imports 47.87 million euros. In 2019, trade in goods with Switzerland amounted to 46.22 million euros, of which exports were 8 million euros, and imports were 38.22 million euros, while in 2018, trade in goods amounted to 42.77 million euros, of which exports were 7 06 million euros, and imports 35.21 million euros.

Montenegro’s total foreign trade in goods in 2022, according to Monstat’s preliminary data, amounted to 4.24 billion euros, which is 44.1 percent more than in 2021. The largest foreign trade partners in exports were Serbia with 149.4 million euros, Switzerland with 107.9 million euros and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 90.6 million euros.

The Swiss-Montenegro Chamber of Commerce particularly emphasizes the excellent cooperation with the Embassy of Switzerland in Montenegro and is able to provide support to its members in the promotion of their business.
